Chapter 6: Old Betrayals

The sun had begun to dip below the horizon, casting long shadows over the forest as Ethan and Ray trudged onward. The day had been exhausting—physically and mentally draining—as they pushed deeper into the wilderness, trying to stay one step ahead of the inevitable pursuit. As they walked in silence, their thoughts were heavy with the events of the past and the uncertainty of the future. But the silence between them carried more weight than just exhaustion. There was tension, unspoken but palpable, and it had been building since their escape from Silverbrook.

Ethan’s mind was racing, thoughts spinning wildly as the adrenaline from the morning’s escape wore off. The more he thought about their situation, the more uneasy he became. Ray was a mystery—a man of few words but many secrets. Ethan had relied on him to orchestrate their escape, but now, doubts were creeping in. Ray’s calm demeanor, his knowledge of the prison’s security systems, and his connections to the outside world—they all pointed to a past that Ethan didn’t fully understand. It was becoming clear that Ray was no ordinary inmate, and Ethan wondered if trusting him had been a mistake.

They finally reached a clearing, where Ray signaled for them to stop. “We’ll rest here for a bit,” he said, his voice low and steady.

Ethan nodded, grateful for the break. His legs ached, and his body was screaming for rest. He sat down on a fallen log, wiping the sweat from his brow as he glanced at Ray. The older man was unfazed by the day’s events, methodically checking the contents of his backpack. Ethan admired Ray’s calmness, but it also unnerved him. Who was Ray, really? And why had he been so determined to break out of Silverbrook?

As the minutes passed in silence, Ethan’s thoughts drifted back to the events that had led him here. His wrongful conviction had been the turning point in his life, but now, as he replayed the trial in his mind, another painful memory resurfaced—one that had haunted him for years: Liam.

Liam had been Ethan’s best friend since childhood. They had grown up together, inseparable, like brothers. But as they grew older, their paths had diverged. Ethan had pursued a career in law, while Liam had drifted into the shadows, getting involved in murky deals and dangerous people. Ethan had tried to help him, tried to pull him back from the brink, but Liam had always resisted. He had chosen his own path, one that led him deeper into the criminal underworld.

When Ethan had been arrested and charged with a crime he didn’t commit, Liam had been one of the few people who could have cleared his name. But instead of standing by his side, Liam had vanished, leaving Ethan to face the trial alone. The betrayal had cut deeper than anything Ethan had ever experienced. He had lost everything—his freedom, his reputation, and most of all, his trust in the people closest to him.

Now, as Ethan sat in the forest, far from the life he had once known, the memory of Liam’s betrayal resurfaced with fresh intensity. He had buried the pain for years, focusing instead on surviving prison, but it was impossible to forget. Liam’s disappearance had never made sense. Ethan had spent years wondering why his best friend had abandoned him when he needed him most.

“Ethan,” Ray’s voice cut through his thoughts, pulling him back to the present. “You all right?”

Ethan blinked, shaking off the memories. “Yeah, I’m fine,” he lied. “Just…thinking.”

Ray gave him a knowing look, as if he could see through the facade. “You’ve got a lot on your mind. I get it. But right now, we need to stay focused. This isn’t over yet.”

Ethan nodded, but the unease in his chest didn’t go away. He wasn’t just thinking about Liam—he was thinking about Ray, too. He still didn’t know enough about the man he had escaped with, and the more time they spent together, the more Ethan realized that Ray had his own agenda.

As they sat in the clearing, the air between them grew thick with unspoken tension. Ethan wanted answers, but he wasn’t sure how to ask the questions. What if Ray wasn’t who he said he was? What if their escape had been part of a larger plan, one that Ethan wasn’t privy to?

Finally, after what felt like an eternity of silence, Ethan spoke. “Ray…I’ve been meaning to ask you something.”

Ray glanced up from his backpack, his expression unreadable. “Go ahead.”

“Back in Silverbrook…how did you know so much about the security systems? I mean, you’re just an inmate like the rest of us, right?”

Ray paused for a moment before answering, his eyes narrowing slightly. “Let’s just say I’ve been around the block a few times. I’ve made some connections over the years—people who know how to get things done.”

Ethan frowned. “Connections? Like who?”

Ray chuckled softly, though there was no humor in it. “Let’s just say I’ve dealt with people who have a vested interest in me staying out of prison. But don’t worry, Ethan. I’m not dragging you into anything you can’t handle.”

Ethan’s suspicion deepened. “Why did you break out? What’s your plan, Ray? I need to know the truth.”

Ray’s expression hardened. “The truth?” He stood up, pacing slightly before turning to face Ethan. “The truth is, Ethan, I’ve got scores to settle. People out there—people like the ones who put you behind bars—think they can play with our lives. I’m not letting that slide.”

Ethan’s chest tightened. “What do you mean? Who are you going after?”

Ray stared at him for a long moment, his gaze intense. “The same people who betrayed you, Ethan. You think I don’t know what happened to you? I know more than you think.”

Ethan’s heart skipped a beat. “What are you talking about?”

Ray took a step closer, lowering his voice. “Liam.”

Ethan felt the world tilt beneath him. “Liam? What do you know about Liam?”

Ray’s eyes were cold. “I know that he didn’t just disappear. He made a deal, Ethan—a deal to save his own skin. He sold you out.”

Ethan’s breath caught in his throat. The words hit him like a punch to the gut. “That’s not possible. Liam wouldn’t—”

Ray cut him off. “Wouldn’t he? Think about it, Ethan. You’ve spent all these years wondering why he abandoned you. What if he didn’t? What if he was part of the setup all along?”

Ethan shook his head, his mind racing. “No…no, that can’t be true. He was my best friend. He wouldn’t do that.”

Ray’s gaze was unrelenting. “People will do anything when they’re backed into a corner. Liam made a choice, Ethan. And that choice was to save himself at your expense.”

Ethan felt the ground shift beneath him. The betrayal he had felt all those years ago now took on a new, darker dimension. If what Ray was saying was true, then Liam hadn’t just abandoned him—he had actively participated in the conspiracy that had ruined Ethan’s life.

“But why?” Ethan whispered, his voice hoarse. “Why would he do that?”

Ray’s expression softened slightly, as if he understood the weight of the revelation. “Because he was in deep. Deeper than you ever knew. Liam was involved with some very dangerous people, Ethan. People who had the power to destroy him if he didn’t cooperate. He was faced with a choice: give them what they wanted, or lose everything.”

Ethan’s mind was spinning. The pieces were falling into place, but it didn’t make the betrayal any easier to swallow. “And what did they want?”

Ray’s voice was low. “They wanted you.”

Ethan stared at him, disbelief and anger surging through him. “Me? Why?”

Ray sighed, running a hand through his hair. “Because you were the perfect scapegoat. You were clean, you had no criminal record, and you were connected to Liam. They needed someone to take the fall for what they were doing, and you fit the bill perfectly.”

Ethan’s hands clenched into fists, his chest heaving with anger. “So they framed me…and Liam just went along with it?”

Ray nodded. “He didn’t have a choice. They had him by the throat. If he didn’t cooperate, they would have taken him down too. He thought he could get out clean, but they used him just like they used you.”

Ethan felt a surge of rage like he had never felt before. The betrayal, the injustice—it was all too much to bear. “I trusted him,” he muttered, his voice thick with emotion. “I would have done anything for him.”

Ray’s eyes softened. “I know. But that’s the thing about betrayal, Ethan. It always comes from the people you trust the most.”

Ethan stood up, his body trembling with anger. “So what now? What do we do?”

Ray’s gaze was steady. “We find Liam. And we make him pay for what he did.”

Ethan’s heart pounded in his chest. The thought of confronting Liam, of facing the man who had betrayed him so completely, filled him with a mix of anger and fear. But there was no turning back now. The hunt had begun, and it wasn’t just the law that was after them. They were after something far more dangerous: the truth.

“Where is he?” Ethan asked
